The seminar: "Languages, nations, religions. Neighborhoods at the Northern Kashubia"
26-28.09.2003
In cooperation with: Christian Pletzing, Academia Baltica - Lubeka.

In the North of Kashubia, among Puck, Wejherowo and Żarnowieckie Lake a colourful mixture of languages, religions and nations has been formed since the medieval times. Apart from Kashubian, German and Polish people there were also newcomers from Fryzja and the Netherlands who settled down here in the 16th and 17th centuries. From 1945 Ukraine people had to accept this region as their new home whereas the Germans left their fatherland. The nationality of the Northern Kashubia had been also constantly changing: the rule of the Pomeranian Princes was replaced by the reign of the Teutonic Order. Later the region was governed by the Crown of the Polish Kingdom until the First Partition of Poland in 1772 and then taken over by Prussia. In the first half of the 20th century there were Polish and German claims to the land properties.

The aim of the seminar was to ask questions about the possibility of coexistence of different, often unfriendly ethnic and religious groups which created the history and the present times of Pomerania / Eastern Prussia and whose relations were complicated, neither hostile nor friendly.

Sample lectures:

Grzegorz Berendt (University of Gdańsk) Krokowa and its surroundings during the "ghastly century" 1939-1949.
